Riassunto

La diffusione del virus SARS-CoV-2 e l’introduzione di misure restrittive hanno portato ad una drastica riduzione della diffusione del Virus Respiratorio Sinciziale (VRS). A livello mondiale, anche dopo la rimozione delle misure restrittive, sono stati registrati pochi casi di infezione da VRS nella stagione epidemica 2020-2021. Nella stagione 2021-2022, però, il VRS è ricomparso e ha provocato un’epidemia anticipata rispetto alle stagioni epidemiche precedenti. Questo articolo revisiona la letteratura attuale e propone delle possibili spiegazioni al fenomeno e alle future implicazioni.

Summary

The epidemiology of respiratory syncytial virus after the Covid-19 pandemic

The diffusion of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the implementation of restrictive measures led to a drastic reduction of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) diffusion. Few RSV cases have been detected worldwide in the epidemic season 2020-2021, even after the removal of the restrictions. In the epidemic season 2021-2022, however, the RSV has been isolated again with an atypical and anticipated seasonal pattern. We review the current literature and present possible explanations to this phenomenon and to the future implications.
